to familiarise yourself with the Truth. An introduction covering topics from A. Parthasarathy's Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities.
In this series of classes on 'The Eternities' embark on a study of life, based on Swami A. Parthasarathy's magnum opus Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities, online with Sudhakar Dass.
Sudhakar is an alumnus of the Vedanta Academy in India and has been studying and sharing Vedanta, the philosophy of life, for two decades.
The law of life is that the mind should be at rest while the body engages in action.
- Swami A. Parthasarathy Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities
The session is based on Chapter 1 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy. It introduces you to the philosophy of Vedanta and its purpose in your life:
To endow you with material prosperity, peace of mind and the lasting bliss within that we are all heir to.
From time immemorial human beings have sought the truth of our origin, purpose, existence. A name was given to this unknown mystery - God. Thus the unknown was replaced with another unknown and humanity is no clearer. True education must proceed from the known to the unknown. Vedanta's approach to the unknown and God is to analyse and proceed from what you know: the World and the Human Being.
Life is a series of experiences. An experience is made up of the individual and the world. Whilst the world has been developed the individual has been neglected to a point of fault. This session dissects the individual and the roles of one's different equipments in life. Lastly the importance of optimising one's own faculties rather than comparing oneself to others.
The nature of the world is change. There is heat and cold, joy and sorrow, honour and dishonour. The mind gets attached to objects and beings in the world not realising they must change and pass leaving us disappointed or heartbroken. The session covers how you can develop the intellect to adapt and thrive in the changing world. However to find lasting peace, you need to go within to the changeless Self. Make the paradigm shift from correcting the world to gaining knowledge of your Self.
The session is based on Chapter 4 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy. True education and especially spiritual education should uplift the individual on all levels of the personality. Vedanta infuses the elements of right living. Service in action, love with emotion and enduring wisdom in thought. Practice of these elements help one evolve towards human perfection.
The suggestion for systematic study of wisdom is to apply for first-year of the elearning course and try it. elearning.vedantaworld.org
The 3 temperaments are tamas, rajas and sattva. Human evolution is to reduce tamas and rajas and promote sattva. Sattva is a temperament of serenity in and through the thick of work and every phase life presents you with. Based on an individual's proportion of the 3 temperaments, particular work would be suitable for one's evolution. This was the basis of India's caste system. Its improper application created division rather than being a support for individuals to evolve towards peace and prosperity.
The session is based on Chapter 4 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy.
In this session 'action' is defined and dissected. Wrong action makes work burdensome, stressful and agitating. While right action energises, renders peace and above all ushers you to the 'actionless', blissful state of Self-realisation.
A perfect action is when your mind is at rest while your body is engaged in dynamic action. To remove stress and boredom from an action one needs to reduce the involvement of egocentric desire. The session details how to use higher desire to displace lower ones and minimise desire's influence by acting on the intellect's duties not the mind's likes and dislikes.
The session is based on Chapter 5 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy. We continue next session to discuss the emotions of kindness, Pity and Charity.
While Vedanta highlights the development of the intellect, emotions play a significant role in being human. A human being is both a thinking and feeling being. When directed by the intellect, emotions purify and strengthen you. However when emotions overwhelm the intellect, they can devastate you. The session covers how to assess emotion and use it to improve one's relationships and peace of mind. The session ends with a discussion of what love is and its opposite, attachment.
The session is based on Chapter 6 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy. We continue next session to discuss the emotions of kindness, Pity and Charity.
After love, a few other emotions are discussed in this session and their facets. Kindness is a feeling of gentleness, compassion which renders a human being divine, spiritual. One must differentiate between acts of kindness and thoughts of kindness to never be victimised. Similarly pity is a feeling of sympathy for another's misfortune but requires the intellect's participation to truly assist and not a fall prey to the endless pleasing of their emotions. Finally charity, the feeling of giving is highlighted. True charity elevates both donor and donee and is not indiscriminate.
The session explains the difference between social welfare and social consciousness. The need of the hour is to share social consciousness to uplift the individual and society. All emotions including charity need to be expressed with the intellect's discretion. The session goes on to trace the root of emotion as desire with the varied emotions being but modifications of desire. To free oneself from the leash of desires and their emotions, we are advised to work for a higher ideal. The lower desires then trickle away. But it's only upon complete removal of desire do you enjoy the absolute bliss of Self-realisation.
At the end of the session the Vedanta Elearning Course was recommended as a practical, structured and consistent way to develop the intellect. You can apply on www.elearning.vedantaworld.org
Humanity gropes in the darkness of stress, sorrow and suffering. The cause is the ignorance of our true nature, the Self within. Only the Knowledge of the Self as the light of wisdom can remove this dark veil of ignorance. The session details the nature of the Self as absolute existence, knowledge and bliss. And suggests a deeper inquiry into the question - Who am I. True human progress and civilisation should be marked by the level of self-unfoldment rather than material or monetary aggrandisement.
The session is based on Chapter 7 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy.
The light of wisdom can dispel all suffering and sorrow. However to gain the wisdom takes time, consistency and proper methodology. In this session the essential requirements to gain knowledge and convert it to living wisdom are discussed. The session is based on Chapter 7 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy.
Those ignorant of the wisdom blame external factors for their stress and suffering. They complain about corruption and the suffering of the honest at the hands of the bad. The timeless question of why the honest suffer can be answered by an understanding of the composition of human beings. Vedanta, the light of wisdom offers the honest the strength to avoid exploitation and the bad, the logic and higher values to evolve to good.
The session is based on Chapter 7 of the book Vedanta Treatise: The Eternities by A. Parthasarathy.
